Enroll in French higher education

Enroll in a French university

JPEG For most degrees, you must have a high school diploma, and most of the time, one or two years of undergraduate studies.
The high school diploma is not always enough to enroll in a French university.

If you wish to enroll in the first year of studies in a French university, you must file a DAP (Demande d’Admission Préalable : Preliminary Admission Application).

You have to do it online at this address between December 1st and January 31st, the year before the year you wish to enroll in university.

You will then need to take a language test (if you have not taken the DALF, you have to take the Test de connaissance du français (TCF) pour la DAP).

If you wish to enroll in 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th year
, you need to contact directly the university of your choice, who will send you an application form and the instructions to fill it out.

Check out the list of French universities.

Enroll in a short degree program

To enroll in a technical school and prepare degrees such as the BTS (Brevet de Technicien Supérieur) and the DUT (Diplôme Universitaire de Technologie), you need to contact the institution of your choice directly.

Check out the list of IUT.

Enroll in a "Grande Ecole"

To enroll in a "Grande Ecole", you need to contact the institution of your choice directly.

Deadlines and admission procedures may vary, it is therefore better to contact the institution as soon as possible.

The "Grandes Ecoles" include Engineering Schools and Business Schools.

Check out the list of Grandes Ecoles and the list of Engineering Schools.

Language tests

The common tests are DALF and TCF.
You need to have taken one or the other in order to enroll in a French university.

The DELF (Diplôme d’Etudes en Langue Française) and the DALF (Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française) are official diplomas delivered by the French Ministry of Education to certify foreign candidates’ skills in French.

You can take these tests in testing facilities located in more than 150 countries, including France.

The TCF (Test de Connaissance du Français) is another French language proficiency test.
It is intended for people who do not claim French as their native language, but who wish, for personal or professional reasons, to have their French skills easily and quickly validated by a recognized test.

You can find here the list of testing facilities for TCF in the US.

If you want to know about dates and prices, contact the closest testing facilities.

You can also find on the CIEP website all the information you need (detailed presentation of the test, practical information etc.).
