This month, we are taking you to the astonishing region of Provence! As you approach Provence there’s a magical moment when you finally leave the north behind: cypresses and red-tile roofs appear; you hear the screech of cicadas and breathe the scent of wild thyme and lavender. Along the highway, oleanders bloom against a backdrop of austere, sun-filled landscapes, the very same that inspired the Post-Impressionists... Provence is arguably one of the most irresistible region in France. It ranges from the snow-capped mountains of the southern Alps to the delta plains of the Camargue, and boasts Europe’s greatest canyon, the Gorges du Verdon. Fortified towns guard its ancient borders; countless villages perch defensively on hilltops, such as Roussillon or Les Baux-de-Provence; and great cities like Marseille, Aix-en-Provence, and Avignon are full of cultural glories. The sensual inducements of Provence include sunshine, food and wine (think of Châteauneuf-du-Pape or Gigondas), and the heady perfumes of Mediterranean vegetation. No wonder it has for so long attracted the rich and famous, the artistic and reclusive, and ever-growing throngs of summer visitors...

This month, we are taking you to the beautiful region of Auvergne. From Moulins to Salers this region is famous in the entire world for its cheeses (Bleu d’Auvergne, Salers cheese, Cantal cheese), but also for its little villages, that are thought of to be amongst the most beautiful of France, like Montpeyroux. Auvergne is a region full of history, packed with medieval castles (like the Château de Murol perched on top of a basalt outcrop), majestic old churches and cathedrals (think about the Cathédrale Notre Dame du Puy, a UNESCO World Heritage Site), but also with pleasant and relaxing thermal cities like those that have developed in the 19th and 20th centuries around Vichy! But when you think about Auvergne, what first comes to mind is nature: the breathtaking eroded volcanoes, the almost perfectly round crater lakes, and the pyramidal hilltops. And, of course, Auvergne is absolutely fantastic for food. Just think about Aligot, Truffade, Tripoux, or a good Salers steak, and tell us you don’t want to be there immediately!

French Corner is back for a special edition in March! As we prepare to celebrate French gastronomy on March 21 with the special event Goût de France / Good France, we’ve decided to present to you in video throughout the month the 7 restaurants and chefs participating in New England! They are joining the 1500 chefs on 5 continents who will be serving a delicious French menu that evening. Discover them below!
In this cold winter month, escape from the wind chills and imagine yourself in Burgundy! Stroll down the steep vineyards of the Côte de Nuits, dreaming of opening a bottle of 1990 Romanée-Conti while smelling in the air the lavish fumet of a creamy époisses! Return to the Medieval Times, when the region still was one of France’s most powerful Duchy, while wandering around the heavenly city of Vézelay or visiting the Romanesque Abbey of Fontenay. From Dijon, in the north, former home to the Dukes of Burgundy, and the city’s Burgundian polychrome roofs, to Mâcon in the south, closest city to the ruins of the great Abbey of Cluny and to the Rock of Solutré, of which former French President François Mitterrand used to make ritual ascents, discover a region dedicated to wine, to gastronomy — to l’art de vivre — and upon which history has left an indelible mark!

It shared border with Germany, the Rhin and its history had greatly influence this rich region in monuments, museums and history.
