Immersion programs in the American school system
Immersion programs offer instruction of a classical school curriculum in a foreign language, which becomes the medium of instruction rather than focus of study.
There are several degrees of immersion which offer a larger or smaller portion of the program taught in the foreign language. The objective is not only to master a second language, but also to master the contents of the subjects studied in the second language.
There exist 40 immersion programs in the United States which count more than 12,000 students and 600 teachers. There are two immersion programs for French in New England, in Milton and Holliston.
